Indra’s Weave : Co – Creation with Soho Classroom, Shanghai
There is something quietly transformative about putting unfamiliar tools in someone’s hands and asking them to make something. No experience required. No hierarchy. Just wire, needles, and the slow discovery that the person beside you is struggling with the same stitch — and laughing about it.
In Shanghai, in collaboration with Soho Classroom, I led a copper wire knitting workshop introducing participants to the traditional German knitting technique at the heart of my practice. What unfolded went far beyond craft instruction. Strangers became collaborators. Individual pieces — knitted separately, imperfect, personal — were joined on the floor into a single large mesh, then lifted and suspended as a collective installation. The room changed the moment it went up.
The work that grew from this process — Indra’s Weave: Co-Creation — was awarded the First Prize of the FOMAS Group Special Prize at the Arte Laguna Prize 21st edition, and has entered the permanent corporate collection of FOMAS Group. A reminder that what begins in a room full of laughter and tangled wire can travel further than anyone expects.
